I'm standing for election for the St John and All Saints ward in May 2015
Vote Independent!
Vote Adrian
Hicks
Independent councillors are likely to hold the balance of
power within the Council, untainted by the party power politics of the tired Tories
and Lib Dems and copycat Labour. Independent councillors have powerful and real
influence.
Labour’s councillor for the ward is standing down and the
new Labour candidate, 20 years old, lacks experience of local government.
I bring a safe pair of hands and experience to the ward.
About me: I have successfully represented the ward from 2007
to 2011. I have lived in Winchester nearly all
my life and have worked in the A&E department of the Royal County
Hospital for 39 years. I
have also served in the Royal Observer Corps. I’ve been with my partner,
Bernadette, for the last 25 years.
As a resident in the area and experienced councillor I
understand the issues facing the ward and know how to successfully address
them.
Highcliffe
Sports Centre: I vigorously and strongly oppose
proposals to move the sports centre to Bar End. Such a move will hugely
increase traffic congestion and parking problems in and around Bar End Road and
Highcliffe. It will alter the very nature of Highcliffe at a stroke if it goes
ahead.
Council
House Rents: For the last five years these have
risen at well over the rate of inflation despite falling real wages and incomes.
With reductions in benefits, many households are facing increasing problems in
paying their rents. I will fight to keep rent increases to a minimum.
New
flats for working people: Land is in short supply in Winchester and I intend to
push for mid-sized blocks of affordable flats for single people.
Flats
for old people: I wholeheartedly support plans to
build new specialised and advanced sheltered accommodation for ageing tenants.
Council
house modernisation: As metred water is now the norm, I
will fight to get modern shower units and low water use toilets fitter in every
household. This will cut household water bills.
Food
Bank: Poverty continues to increase. It is essential that the
Council follow other local authorities and provide financial assistance to our
two food banks, one of which is within the ward.
Potholes:
Roads within the ward are increasingly full of potholes which are dangerous to
cyclists and motor cyclists and damage cars. The council needs to undertake
remedial work.
Fracking:
drilling licenses have been issued for areas around Winchester
– from Kings Worthy westward to near to Stockbridge and for under Hampage Wood,
east of Winchester.
Whilst such licences are not the responsibility of Winchester City Council,
fracking offers the prospect of well paid jobs in the Winchester area as well as lower gas prices.
However, the Council needs to recognise serious voter concerns and complaints about
the environmental impact. I will push them hard within the Council should I be
elected.
